VERSE ONE Nigga... The only Earth underneath me is scorched. Dive into waters uncharted, Nolan North. This life… each breath is accompanied by remorse. Apologies with every exhale, but of course. Not bending to the force of anxiety’s the movement. Like Stella wondering where her groove went. Sharpen up the knife that I use to cut through bullshit… Spit the kinda truth that only comes with tons of bruises. Nigga… This here is cataclysmic wisdom. The kind that’s capable of shattering the system. Splattering the vision, cause a perilous collision of what a nigga wants and what a nigga really needs. And that perfect storm where the two begins to bleed is where you’ll find me sitting atop a lightning rod scripting a manifesto into the fuckin clouds with my playlist as just a bunch of thunder sounds. CHORUS X2 What good is breathing underwater if a nigga can’t swim? Look around, and all my people are sinking to the bottom… So what the fuck’s the point of jumping in? VERSE TWO Nigga... I’m no closer to catharsis than I was when I originally started this shit. I know the whispers are vultures flying over until curtains fall. But, while I’m on, might as well keep dancing til someone sandmans me off this damn stage. My rage is pervasive. Can’t tell due to a reserved cadence that masks all the chaos tucked in pockets of grace I hide behind still, Like doing pirouettes through a minefield. Yet, why do I feel so at home here when everything is exploding around me? I’m in a state of constant almost-drowning, gasping for air that won’t reciprocate my embrace. I’m coming for the air that I’m owed. So, surprise morherfuckers, I’m alive. Even so, I ask... CHORUS X2 What good is breathing underwater if a nigga can’t swim? Look around, and all my people are sinking to the bottom… So what the fuck’s the point of jumping in? BRIDGE Why can’t I be stronger? Why can I no longer walk without burning the bridges I stand on? And, I never planned on my life being a mess. So, condolences to my potential, lay it to rest. Let it rest. CHORUS X2 What good is breathing underwater if a nigga can’t swim? Look around, and all my people are sinking to the bottom… So what the fuck’s the point of jumping in?

about

The song is about feeling stuck. It's about breaking free from one set of chains only to find oneself in another. I think the head space that brought me to making this song was me reflecting on the person I used to be and repeating the same mistakes of my past. The ultimate message, I hope, is that progress and growth are not linear.

about

Lewis Morris Providence, Rhode Island

Lewis M. is a boston-based (and Providence born) poet, beatmaker, and MC. He has performed at the Apollo Theater in NYC, The Smithsonian, among many other venues. His beats retain a refreshingly simplified approach to hip-hop production that harkens back to the boom-bap of the 90's while remaining fresh and new.
